A phobia causes an intense fear of a certain object or situation. Although the object or situation generally poses little or no actual danger, the fear itself is very real.
This fear can cause emotional and even physical reactions. In some cases, it can prevent the person with the phobia from going about their normal life. For instance, those with a fear of large, open spaces (a form of agoraphobia) may feel unable to leave their homes. People with an intense fear of flying may pass up fun trips or career opportunities.
The team at Psychiatric Associates is highly experienced at successfully treating phobias. Our therapists can help you slowly learn to face your fears. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help you overcome your anxiety.
